This species of Tillandsia is native to Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. T. xiphioides showcases thick, succulent, leather-like leaves which allows it to go long periods of time without water. When in bloom T. xiphioides exhibits multiple large pure white, frilly edged flowers that are citrus scented—somewhat reminiscent of the scent of a Gardenia flower. This species grows best outdoors and likes strong indirect, partial to full sun. It is a more drought tolerant variety so it doesn’t need too much water. Good aeration is required for this plant and it must be protected from frost. Tillandsia xiphioides prefer to be mounted on a solid substrate that does not retain water. It can be grown on almost any imaginable decorative mount, including shells, rocks, slate, driftwood, etc.
